Game Developers Consider Outsourcing to the Philippines

Blizzard Entertainment, maker of popular games StarCraft and World of Warcraft, Microsoft Studios (Xbox games) and five other game developers and publishers are considering offshoring to the Philippines.

According to a statement by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), gaming companies Ubisoft, Activision, Electronic Arts, 2K and Square Enix-Eidos have also expressed interest during the 2014 External Development Summit (XDS) in Vancouver, Canada.

The DTI sent representatives from the Game Developers Association of the Philippines and the Animation Council of the Philippines to the XDS to meet with 28 gaming companies. The XDS is an exclusive video game industry event attended by professionals and service/IT outsourcing providers.

Out of the $1.5 billion global outsourcing market for game development and animation, the Philippines currently has a $136 million share. The country targets a 10 percent increase of the shares by 2016.
