ASW Vietnam Tuan Anh Nguyen

A 2021 ASW Global Client Spotlight Awardee, Tuan Anh’s passion for learning and sharing the latest IT developments reflects his drive to deliver the best service for our client partners. In his leadership role, he has learned to develop essential soft skills to complement his expert-level technical skills. This makes him a valued mentor to his fellow developers and an amazing asset to the team. Tuan Anh talks about his love of IT and his journey as a team leader.

1. Hi Tuan Anh, could you tell us a bit about yourself? Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?

My name is Nguyen Tuan Anh and I’m 31 years old. Outside of work, my most favourite thing to do is hanging out with my family, watching football, and enjoying some fresh beer.

2. Have you always been interested in doing IT work? What inspired you to focus on IT as a career?

Yes, I have always loved being in IT. I love working with technology and learning new things. It makes me feel like I can make big things to help people.

3. How many years have you been with ASW? How did you start?

I have been working in ASW for four years. I was a senior software engineer when I started at ASW. I had a good start because my colleagues were very nice and helped me a lot.

4. Can you tell us more about your role here at ASW? What’s a regular day like for you?

I am the Team Leader of eDocs. I start my day at 7:00 AM and have my iced milk coffee while I check my email. I have daily meetings with my other team members to get updates on their progress. I help out when someone has any tech issues. I also have online meetings with our Sydney-based client to catch up on product insights and planning for the new features.

5. What was your career like that led you to join ASW?

I was a developer working for health care applications. The product was great, but the office location is very far from my home. So I decided to look for new challenges and work with a company that’s also near my home.

6. As a senior developer, how do you deal with the challenges in your line of work?

I face many challenges such as researching technical matters for the dev team, reviewing code, and helping other developers improve their skills. I do all those tasks almost simultaneously, so I need to manage and organise my time correctly and efficiently.

7. What changes have you seen within yourself, personally and professionally, when you took on a leadership role? What leadership skills have you learned to develop?

I noticed that I am now calmer and more patient. My communication skills have improved a lot ever since I took on a leadership position.

8. You were among ASW’s Client Spotlight awardees last year. The feedback we received is that you are a “mentor to other developers in his technical ability and professional behaviour.” Can you share with us how you guide your team with your mentoring skills?

I work closely with the dev teams, perform code reviews and provide feedback. I also conduct many training sessions to help other developers learn about new things.

9. What project or task have you done at ASW that you are most proud of? According to the client’s feedback, you were instrumental with your contributions in “improving system scalability and reliability” of eDocs. Can you share with us your experience about that project?

The task that I loved the most in the eDocs project was migrating eDocs legacy applications to the latest framework using .NET Core. This helped improve the performance of the key functions in eDocs and in implementing the automatic processing document.

10. What are you looking forward to in terms of IT developments and in your own career?

I love working with Cloud. In the future, I want to learn and get certified in Cloud Computing and in Cloud Architecture.

11. What important lessons have you learned in your leadership role?

Be calm and keep learning new technologies.

12. Thanks for your time! Is there any special message or advice you’d like to share with your fellow ASW colleagues, especially for those who are aspiring for leadership positions?

Be patient, work hard, and never give up. Good things take time.
