What It’s Like to Work in Downtown Lafayette, LA

In a recent News & Brews event hosted by the LDC, many of the local Perficient staff worked onsite for the full day.

Although a lot of folks are still working from home, some of the offices are beginning to reopen their doors and welcome folks back in.

It’s no secret that many tech companies today, are transitioning to a fully remote working environment. So, when a company asks their employees to work onsite, it can sometimes feel like they’re asking a lot.

I agree that remote work comes with a lot of perks. But so does working onsite. Especially in downtown Lafayette, LA.

Our downtown region is both our city center and our cultural center.

So today, I’m going to discuss how downtown Lafayette, LA asserts its own unique spin on some of the more obvious benefits of working onsite.

A Sense of Community

At Perficient, we value people.

And the LDC has its own sense of community that mirrors the Acadiana spirit.

While Lafayette, LA may not be a big city, you’ll find that you when you work downtown, you’re still surrounded by other young professionals.

There’s definitely an urban vibe waiting to be tapped into. There’s no shortage of restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat or a cup of coffee.

And then there are the in-office activities and events, which give members of the culture and philanthropy teams an opportunity to shape the office culture.

In addition, the LDC office has a beer garden across the street for Happy Hour convenience, and it’s poised perfectly to participate in local cultural events happening right outside its doors. Mardi Gras, Festival International, Downtown Alive, just to name a few…

Teamwork makes the dream work

Increased socialization also leads to increased communication.Downtown Lafayette sign with LUS Fiber sign in back

In addition to the socialization benefit, working in office allows you to learn from and collaborate with your colleagues.

We’re all accustomed to chatting on Teams and meeting on camera, but nothing compares to being able to chat with colleagues in person.

It’s a lot easier to do development work when you can just lean over and have a fresh set of eyes check your code.

The office has connectivity on its own, but even when you are out and about town, internet from LUS Fiber is everywhere.

Access to office resources and the environment

With all the hoopla around remote work, it can be easy to forget that not everyone has a dedicated home office or high-speed internet at home.

You might feel less like you work from home and more like you live at work.

It can be hard to focus on work when the distractions of home are all around you. I’m speaking from experience on this one.

But the office doesn’t just give us access to a dedicated space or internet. Office environments come with other resources as well. Such as:

  • Printers
  • Fax machines (that’s right)
  • Shredders
  • And the access to human resources (aka your colleagues as mentioned above)

The LDC office in downtown Lafayette, LA offers many benefits. It’s central to the U.S., being at the intersection of two major U.S. interstates. And, it’s in similar time zones and climates to our near-shore resources.

For those working onsite, it offers an increased opportunity to facilitate conversation, a sense of community, and productivity.

Got some ideas about additional benefits to working onsite that I didn’t include? Drop them in the comments below.
